Marine and Land Wildlife

While hiking the trails throughout the region, users will be exposed to a variety of marine and land wildlife.

Sea stacks and cliffs provide ideal nesting grounds for a variety of birds including Herring and Great Black-backed gulls, Kittiwakes, Northern Gannets, Shearwaters (hagdown), and Black Guillemots. Bald Eagles who also nest in nearby cliffs can be seen soaring above the spectacular coastline.

Prominent coastal headlands provide natural viewing platforms, from which to view the variety of whales that come to Newfoundland each year to feed off capelin. Easily recognizable by their distinct dorsal fin, Minke whales are the most common whale species in the region. Humpback whales are also present and are often seen leaping out of the cold Atlantic in an awesome display of power and beauty. A variety of other whales have also been spotted throughout the region, including killer whales and dolphins.

Trails heading furthur inland provide the opportunity to view the different varieties of migratory birds and land mammals. Moose, the most common and largest animal in Newfoundland, can be viewed and photographed from a safe distance. Inland trails are also located near silver and red fox dens. Arctic and snowshoe hares can also be seen scampering across these trails.

Some trails traverse small ponds, streams, and rivers where beavers, otters, and muskrats can be seen. Inland fish species, including brook and mud trout and salmon, can also be seen breaching the waters of these tranquil ponds .

The natural, historical, and cultural features of the Discovery Trail all combine to create a hiking experience that is both inviting and unique.
